Heresy

The Shadowlands aren’t the only source of danger. Heretics dwell in the dark recesses of the Ecumenopolis, hiding from the Light of Dei. The Light of Dei acts as the eyes, ears, and hands of the Orthodoxy. Their paladins, clerics, and inquisitors travel the Ecumenopolis, spreading the good word of Dei, giving their blessings to the faithful, and cleansing heresy wherever it lurks.

The Light of Dei seeks out heretics, and metes out justice. A Knight of Dei can serve as judge, jury, and executioner to any non-elven heretic. An elf accused of heresy has the right to a trial by jury. Capital heresy is punishable by death. Summary executions carried in service to the Orthodoxy of Dei are uncommon, but not unheard of. A Knight of Dei might show mercy to a guilty party if they judge that the heretic is willing to atone. Others might solicit a tithe to cover the cost of an atonement spell. Capital heresy includes the following offenses:

  • Murder
  • Superior assault – Assault of an elf by a non-elf
  • Blasphemy against Dei
  • Heathenry
  • Apostasy, the use of unlicensed arcane magic. Only an elf can be granted a license to practice magic.
  • Black market transactions – all magic items must be purchased from, or sold to, the Orthodoxy’s Bureau of Artifice
  • Harming a living tree
  • Flight
  • Extraplanar contact
  • Necromancy
