The party traveled deeper into Hans Blackroot‘s lair, taking a path along the edge of a chasm that separated the entrance from his laboratory. They fought off a few giant ants, and found a sturdy rope bridge leading across to a door into the underground cliff face. The room beyond was Hans’ laboratory, guarded by a dangerous alchemical golem. The party outsmarted the automaton by luring it to the room’s threshold, dragging it into the bridge, then cutting the ropes so it would smash on the cavern floor 100 feet below.
Hans’ laboratory contained notes on many of his twisted creations, including the Infusion of Identity Assumption, Elixir of Acid Death, and the strange tentacle in the cavern below. There were also several valuable magic items.
After his golem was defeated, Hans sent a minion to deliver his request to negotiate for a conditional surrender. The party humored him long enough to be convinced that he was willing to atone for his crimes by becoming an ally to the party. To set an example of his loyalty, he refused to deliver any information on the Shades of Jundum, but was willing to cut all ties to the terrorist organization. The party has decided to keep Hans confined to his laboratory, on a short leash, and have ordered him to stop committing crimes against nature. In return for their mercy, Hans shared more of his notes with the party. He believes that the Orthodoxy’s interest in Koburan technology is a precursor to a Koburan genocide. He gave them another Koburan Codex that he had stolen from an Orthodoxy compound. He also handed over his notebooks on Elric Tower and Atienne Sinclair, so the party would have something to turn in to the Bureau of the Light.
The party reported back to Rex Kilgore that they found an abandoned laboratory somewhere in the ruins, and were only able to recover a few notebooks. Rex was dissatisfied, but paid the party for their time. They convinced Redd Rockfist that Hans had been killed by his own alchemical bombs in a fight. Redd, satisfied that justice has been served, assigned the party their next quest: to deliver the first Koburan Codex to the leader of the Excavator’s Guild, Goram Glemox. He is located somewhere in Dok’shara District, a 13 day trip by zip-glove.
